The Public Schools Branch has just issued a notice that all schools will close two hours early today.
"Due to the flash freeze warning in effect throughout the province, and the anticipated impact on travel conditions, all PSB schools will be dismissing two hours early today," says the statement.
Environment Canada has upgraded its statement to a full warning, saying the temperature will fall dramatically later today, creating a type of flash freeze.
Water that has accumulated in puddles and ponds, plush slush on the road and any rain that is falling will begin to freeze solid.
The temperature is expected to get to –1C by about 5 p.m. this evening, and then fall steadily all night to reach about –18 by around 6 a.m. Saturday morning as the wind shifts from the south to the northwest this afternoon.
Rain is expected to fall all day, changing to snow around 5 p.m. until around 8 p.m., and then a chance of flurries the rest of the night.
By tomorrow, the weather is expected to be a mix of sun, cloud, flurries and bitter, wind-chill, feel-like temperatures around –28.
Today, the Confederation Bridge currently open to all traffic with no warnings.
