GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — Breaking with tradition, P.E.I.’s premier-designate will be officially sworn in during a ceremony in Georgetown.
On Thursday, Dennis King will become Prince Edward Island’s 33rd premier during a ceremony at the Kings Playhouse in Georgetown. King grew up in nearby Georgetown Royalty and has repeatedly emphasized his roots in the area.
King officially entered politics in November in the same location, announcing his run for the leadership of the Progressive Conservatives.
King’s new cabinet will also be announced and sworn in on the same day by the Island’s Lt.-Gov. Antoinette Perry. Traditionally, incoming governments and cabinet ministers have been sworn in at Government House in Charlottetown.
King is expected to oversee a minority government, with both the Green party and the Liberals in Opposition.
Thursday’s event will coincide with declaration day, in which Elections P.E.I. will officially declare the final election results for all districts except one. District 9 Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park will see a byelection in the coming months.
Thursday’s swearing-in ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the Kings Playhouse, 65 Grafton St., Georgetown. The event will be live-streamed on the government of Prince Edward Island’s Facebook page.
Doors will open at 10:15 a.m. Seating for this public event is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
