SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The provincial Fire Marshal's Office declared the Dec. 2 fire in Summerside accidental.
A family of four was displaced from their Summerside bungalow after a fire on Monday.
A GoFundMe campaign set up for the family said Kirk and Beth Heckkner and their two boys - aged six and nine - lost everything in the fire, including their cat.
The fire, which was reported around 9:30 p.m. Dec. 2, occurred at a residence on Beaver Street.
No one was injured and the family is being assisted by disaster volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross with purchases such as food and clothing.
Relatives have provided the family with a cottage nearby where they can stay for now.
Summerside fire chief Ron Enman said crews were able to put the fire out in about an hour but worked late into the night ensuring there were no hot spots.
“It was a pretty bad fire, there was a lot of smoke damage,” Enman told The Guardian.
Enman said the firefighters worked hard and put forth a “great team effort”.
“It’s a terrible, terrible time for a young family to go through this. It was a beautiful old character home,” Enman said.
“Nobody was hurt and that’s the main thing.”
After completing its investigation, the FMO said the cause is attributed to a space heater igniting combustibles.
