CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

Coun. Mitchell Tweel wants the City of Charlottetown to pay tribute to the top junior A hockey coach in Canada.

Billy McGuigan, head coach of the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals, was recently named top bench boss by the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

“I believe this is his third coaching award from a national perspective,’’ Tweel said following Friday’s meeting of the parks, recreation and leisure committee. “I think it’s something the city should celebrate. He grew up in this city; he played his minor hockey here.’’

Tweel noted that McGuigan grew up on Desbrisay Crescent in Charlottetown and is the son of Barney and Brenda McGuigan.

“He’s a local boy.’’

Tweel instructed staff with the parks, recreation and leisure committee to come up with some ideas on how to pay tribute to the coach and said he will sit down with staff over the next month or so to formulate a plan.
