A new poll by Narrative Research (formerly Corporate Research Associates) has found that Dennis King’s Progressive Conservatives have now eclipsed Peter Bevan-Baker’s Greens in political popularity.
The poll found that 43 per cent of decided voters support the PCs, while 36 per cent support the Greens and 17 per cent support the Liberals. Thirty-five per cent of Islanders chose Bevan-Baker as their preferred premier, while 34 per cent chose King. Fourteen per cent chose former premier Wade MacLauchlan, who resigned as Liberal leader after the election, as their preferred choice for premier. The NDP’s Joe Byrne was the choice of four per cent of voters.
The Green party maintained the lead in opinion polling for the eight-month period leading up to April’s provincial election. Bevan-Baker himself has also been the most popular political leader in P.E.I. for more than two years.
The poll of 300 P.E.I. residents was conducted between May 6 and 23 and is considered accurate within +/- 5.7 percentage points. The sample size of decided voters was 241, and the margin of error on political party support is considered accurate within +/- 6.9 percentage points.
The survey also asked Islanders about their level of satisfaction with the performance of the previous Liberal government of Wade MacLauchlan. Although the Liberals were defeated in April, a roughly equal number said they were either completely or mostly satisfied with the government (47 per cent) as said they were mostly or completely dissatisfied (45 per cent).
