TIGNISH, P.E.I. — Tignish councillor Judy Morrissey-Richard applauded a town decision to make the horse pull field a drop-off location for tree limbs from hurricane Dorian.

“It’s a win-win,” she said.

The central drop-off will let residents dispose of limbs from fallen trees and later, the limbs can be put through a chipper. Morrissey-Richard suggested the chips be used in flowerbeds throughout the municipality.

Mayor Allan McInnis emphasized the location is for tree limbs only. He said there are lots of people around who will cut up the tree trunks in exchange for the firewood.

Mayor McInnis complimented residents who, since the weekend hurricane, have been reaching out to neighbours without electricity a hot meal, a charging station for their devices and a place for a shower.

“That’s pretty darn good,” he said. “I think we’re self-sustaining up here, for sure, because everybody looks after one another."

On Wednesday and Thursday the town posted on social media that it was opening the fire hall from 3 to 7 p.m. for anyone without power who needed a shower or a hot meal.

Coun. Lloyd Gavin told council the hurricane is likely going to delay requested repairs to a number of streetlights in town. Repairs to damage caused by the hurricane will likely command Maritime Electric crews' attention for a while, he said.
