GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A Cardigan man who said he didn’t think he was over the limit when he had a few drinks after work was sentenced recently to 23 days in jail for drunk driving.
Francis Heath Shepherd appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Georgetown where he entered a guilty plea.
Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court that on May 29 at around 3:45 p.m. someone called the RCMP to report a suspected impaired driver.
The police stopped Shepherd in Pooles Corner and he later provided two breathalyzer samples, including one that was at the legal limit.
Beck said Shepherd had two prior convictions for failing the breathalyzer.
Defence lawyer Isaac Quinn told the court Shepherd stopped after work and had a few beers but didn’t feel like he was over the limit.
Shepherd accepted full responsibility for his actions, Quinn said.
Along with the jail time, which Shepherd will serve on weekends, he must also pay a $1,000 fine and is banned from driving for one year.
