SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Summerside police have laid charges against a suspected drug-impaired driver following an incident on July 5 in Summerside.

At around 5:30 p.m., Summerside police received two 911 calls reporting a suspected impaired driver.

The first caller reported seeing a green coloured Chevrolet Cavalier hit a barricade in a Water Street parking lot, causing significant front-end damage. It was reported the car then left the scene heading east on Water Street.

A couple of minutes later, police received a second call reporting a vehicle of a similar description almost hitting two vehicles on St. Clair Street.

An officer reporting to the call located the suspect vehicle, which was travelling west on Water Street by that time.

The vehicle was pulled over and the officer noted the 65-year-old driver, a Summerside man, displaying significant signs of impairment.

He was arrested at the scene and taken into processing.

The driver refused to participate in an exam by a drug recognition evaluator.

As a result, the man will appear in court at a later date to answer to charges of impaired driving by a drug, refusal to participate in a drug detection exam, driving while prohibited and leaving the scene of an accident.
