SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The City of Summerside is still waiting for a promised $50,000 from the provincial government, earmarked to help hire a school resource police officer for Three Oaks Senior High School.
The city put aside $50,000 in its 2019 budget to hire the officer as part of a pilot project, which was contingent on the province matching the funds.
Summerside has since received verbal assurances from the province that it will contribute its share, but to date the city has not received the money or written commitment for it. The city had originally hoped to have the new officer in place for the start of the school year in September.
The officer’s main duties will include responding directly to any criminal activity in the school and participating in the school community to build bridges between police and students.
