SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The issue of vehicles passing school buses in and around the Summerside area is continuing to be a concern for Summerside police.

Officers have received 15 such reports between Oct. 23 and Dec. 4.

As a result of those investigations, five people have been charged under the Highway Traffic Act for failing to stop for school buses displaying flashing lights.

Police are taking a zero-tolerance approach to these types of incidents and are reminding the public to be vigilant when buses are on the roads, as anyone caught passing a bus with flashing lights will be facing charges.

A fine of up to $5,000 goes along with a three-month licence suspension for anyone convicted of this offence.

Members of the public can help to keep students safe by taking note of license plates and vehicle descriptions of any vehicle they see passing buses with flashing red lights and providing that information to police.
