SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Darlene Gallant won’t get to see the smiles of the lucky children that receive her gifts, but knowing she’s helping someone in need is satisfaction enough.

“Every year we drop items off in the police van because we enjoy making the kids happy. I grew up in a large family of brothers and sisters – eight of us in total – and enjoy giving back,” she said. “We never went without as a family, but because of that, we don’t want anyone else to go without."

The Gallants were some of the many people, including local businesses, that came to donate toys and clothing to the fifth annual Cops for Christmas toy drive for the Salvation Army fundraiser.

“It’s a way for us to help the community and give back at this time to ensure all kids have something under the tree on Christmas day,” said Cpl. Jason Blacquiere.

Chief Dave Poirier was once again tasked to stay in the back of the van until it was filled with donations.

“It’s mostly new stuff, toys and sporting equipment, but we will take anything," he said. "There’s certainly a place for it and a need in the community.”

Several officers with the department volunteered their time at the Credit Union Place and kept Poirier entertained as donations quickly filled the van Saturday morning.

“There are some very young kids that have saved all year to make a monetary donation today, as well as a lady that comes every year. It’s been a really good response and we thank the community for their great support” said Blacquiere.
