SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A long-time seniors advocate and Summerside resident was recognized this week for his efforts in building strong communities and helping others.
On Tuesday, Paul H. Schurman was one of five seniors to be named P.E.I.'s 2019 Senior Islanders of the Year.
“Through their tireless volunteer efforts, mentorship, community activities, fundraising, advocacy and overall positive attitude towards life, these Islanders have made a sustained and lasting impact on Prince Edward Island for the benefit of us all,” said Isabelle Christian, Chair of the P.E.I. Seniors’ Secretariat.
Schurman is well known to Islanders as a pioneer in radio and broadcasting, significant contributions to the development of sports, arts, culture and heritage on the Island.
He is a member of the Order of Canada and P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame.
More recently, his efforts have focused on improving the lives of older adults and raising public awareness of seniors' issues. The founder of the Seniors United Network, Schurman is also a member of the P.E.I. Seniors Secretariat.
Of the recognition, Schurman said he wasn't expecting it.
"I've been thanked many times by the communities, and I appreciate this newest award."
The award was something the Seniors' Secretariat set up several years ago, he said.
His nominator said of Schurman: "Paul continues to serve his community and province to this day and in doing so has made the City of Summerside and the Island a better place to live for its residents, especially for seniors."
