SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — No one was seriously hurt following a collision at the corner of Central Street and Route 2 in Summerside on Wednesday. However, a Volkswagen Beetle sustained significant damages.
The collision happened just before 4 p.m. in front of Lockhart’s Garage.
Witness Kyle Richard, who has worked at the service station for eight years, said he didn’t see the moment of impact but said a half-ton truck pulled out of Central Street turning left onto Route 2.
Richard said he figures the driver didn’t see the small gray Beetle heading east on Route 2.
The truck struck the car on the passenger’s side, spinning it around and sending it careening backward into oncoming traffic.
Richard said the car “threaded” through traffic. No other vehicles were hit.
“It drove in here,” said Richard, pointing to the Beetle which had come to rest in the Lockhart’s parking lot. The passenger’s side doors were caved in, the mirror was shredded, and the rear tire was flat.
It was “just lucky” there was no one in the passenger’s seat, said Richard.
The half-ton truck appeared to have a broken front bumper and smashed headlight.
This is the third crash Richard has seen at this corner in just the last year or so.
One was a rear-end collision in a construction zone.
“The other was a T-bone like this (incident),” he said.
RCMP and the Summerside Fire Department were at the scene of the crash.
Capt. Danny Richard with the fire department said both drivers were checked out by Island EMS. No one was taken to hospital.
Firefighters swept the intersection free of debris.
