SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — In a speech brimming with P.E.I. pride Summerside Deputy Mayor Norma McColeman Monday night laid out why Islanders should unite to voice their displeasure with Confederation Bridge tolls.
McColeman was commenting on a motion, which passed unanimously at council, supporting P.E.I. Senator Percy Downe’s efforts to reform the toll system on the Confederation Bridge.
“We are the 'Birthplace of Confederation', we are 'Cradled in the Waves', we are Abegweit and people know us as the 'Million Acre Farm'. We have a lot going in our favour and because we’re small it’s important that we stand together,” said McColeman.
Downe has argued strenuously for some time that Islanders are being treated unfairly because of high tolls to the mainland. Most motorists pay $47.75 each time they leave P.E.I.
He’s also pointed out that people who cross the new $4-billion Champlain Bridge in Quebec won’t have to pay a toll. Summerside’s motion calls on Ottawa to offer the same opportunity to Islanders.
McColeman said since Summerside announced its intention to pass this motion the response has been tremendously supportive.
“Just by the interest and the comments that have been shared thus far, (this) is something that has been a sleeping giant with people,” she said.
Summerisde is also calling on other communities and organizations to pass similar motions or otherwise show support for the senator’s efforts.
“We would encourage all Islanders to get behind Downe’s efforts and also encourage other municipalities to get behind it and make his work a reality,” said Coun. Brian McFeely
