STRATFORD, P.E.I. — A Stratford boy’s creative thinking has earned him a lasting honour with the RCMP.

Blake Pierce, a Grade 1 student at Glen Stewart Primary School, entered a contest to name one of the 13 police puppies born at the Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail, Alta.

Since the puppy names all had to start with “M,” Blake submitted “Magnum” to the contest. It was a winner and Cst. Kristian Thomsen and his canine partner, Fleck, came by the school to deliver Blake’s prizes.

Thomsen and Fleck, one of the P.E.I. Police Dog Service Teams, presented Blake with a certificate, hat, plush puppy and a picture of puppy Magnum.

Each year, the RCMP calls upon the creativeness of Canadian children to name the next generation of police dogs that serve all across our country alongside their human police partners.

"This year's response was remarkable," said Insp. Bill Long, officer in charge of the training centre. "Thank you to all the children, parents and teachers who entered the contest. These names will serve our dogs with pride."

The Centre received a record-setting 34,714 entries from children in every province and territory. This beat the previous record by over 13,000 entries.

The PDSTC is home to the RCMP's national police dog training program and is a part of RCMP Depot Division.

The centre has earned a great reputation for breeding top quality, working German Shepherds and for training dogs with outstanding searching and tracking abilities.

More information about the centre can be found on the RCMP national website.
