CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Sonya Hooper is seeking the Progressive Conservative nomination in Charlottetown-Winsloe.
A byelection is expected in District 10 within the next six months to fill the vacancy left when Liberal Robert Mitchell resigned earlier this month.
Hooper’s announcement comes after educational assistant Susie Dillon and former radio personality Zack Bell announced their intentions to seek the PC nomination.
Hooper is the longtime executive director of the Early Childhood Development Association of P.E.I. (ECDA) and has spent her career advocating for children and families in the province.
Before leading the ECDA of P.E.I., Hooper owned and operated her own childcare centre in Charlottetown for 10 years. While running her business, Hooper raised three daughters and earned a master’s in education from UPEI.
Hooper has volunteered on national childcare boards, while locally she sits on the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance board and is involved with 100 Women Who Care. She has also volunteered with Sherwood and P.E.I. Minor Soccer Associations, Charlottetown Ringette Association and has managed the P.E.I. Canada Games Ringette Team.
“During my time with ECDA I learned the importance of working in collaboration with the community to make big changes,” Hooper said. “I want to take that understanding and apply it to working with my neighbours, friends and family in District 10 to make this a community we are proud to call home.”
Hooper lives in Sherwood with her partner Ben Legault.
