CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. government is partnering with the Canadian Red Cross to deliver the province’s financial assistance program following post-tropical storm Dorian.
About a week after Dorian hit P.E.I. last month causing widespread power outages and toppling thousands of trees, the provincial government announced it would be providing emergency funding to help cover the costs of damages from the storm.
Today, the government announced it asked the Red Cross to manage the program.
The provincial disaster financial assistance program will give residents, small businesses and not-for-profit groups a chance to apply for financial assistance for loss on uninsurable, essential basic property loss.
After the storm, the Red Cross activated its national emergency call centre to help the government track which Islanders reported property damage or other impacts, such as spoiled food.
That service will continue and the Red Cross will start to provide application packages and support for the financial assistance program.
Anyone wanting to apply has to register with the Red Cross by calling 1-800-863-6582 before Nov. 29.
The registration line is available seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Completed applications must be submitted by Dec. 13.
