In preparation for Pride Week 2019, the City of Charlottetown has painted the crosswalks at the intersection of Queen and Grafton streets.
Along with the rainbow colours representing the Pride flag, for the first time this year the city has included the colours of the trans flag (blue, pink and white) to celebrate diversity and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.
The riots occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York which was popular amongst members of the LGBTQ2A+ community in the 1960s, where police would often conduct “gender checks” to see if people’s clothing matched their genitalia. On June 28, 1969 members of the LGBTQ2A+ resisted police and fought back in what is now known as the Stonewall riots, which is seen as one of the most important events leading to the gay rights movement and paved the way for Pride celebrations across North America.
