Lobster fishing on the Island’s North Shore will be extended following a delayed opening this spring due to inclement weather.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced in a notice to harvesters earlier this month that the fishery in lobster fishing areas (LFA) 24 and 26A, which opened May 3, will remain open until July 3. By regulation, the opening date for those areas is April 30.

According to DFO, there are 601 licence holders for the spring lobster fisheries in LFA 24 and 359 licence holders in LFA 26A.

During the 2018 spring lobster fishery, LFA 24 landed 8,681.4 metric tonnes of lobster – an estimated value of $101,402,521; and LFA 26A landed 4,740.3 metric tonnes of lobster – an estimated value of $56,530,698.
