Weather

Snow will be heavy at times across the Island today beginning this morning, turning to snow mixed with ice pellets and blowing snow late this afternoon. Between 30 and 40 centimetres of snow and ice pellets are expected, with winds gusting up to 70 km/h. High of -3 C with a wind chill near -13 C.

Ice pellets or snow ending this evening then cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of flurries with blowing snow early this evening. Winds expected to gust up to 70 km/h. The temperature low is -7 C, but with the wind chill it will feel like -12 C in the evening and -17 C overnight.

WINTER STORM WARNING: Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A low-pressure system approaching from the southwest will track across Nova Scotia this afternoon to lie east of P.E.I. Island this evening.

Snow ahead of this system will spread across the Island later this morning. The snow is likely to change to, or mix with, ice pellets this afternoon before tapering to scattered flurries this evening.

Snowfall amounts of 30 to 40 cm are forecast for the province before tapering to scattered flurries. Increasing easterly winds will give reduced visibility in blowing snow over exposed areas later today.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

For information on emergency plans and kits go to getprepared.gc.ca.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.
