Weather

A winter storm is set to hit this Island this morning, with 20 to 30 centimetres of snow and ice pellets expected.

Snow at times heavy beginning early this morning then changing to ice pellets with blowing snow this afternoon.

Winds will gust up to 70 km/h this afternoon.

Today’s high is -6 C, but with the wind chill it will feel more like -19 C in the morning and -11 C in the afternoon.

Snow and ice pellets amounting to two cm expected this evening and ending after midnight.

Wind gusts up to 70 km/h are expected with a low of -7 C. With the wind chill it will feel like -7 C in the evening and -17 C overnight.

WINTER STORM WARNING: Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

Snow at times heavy ahead of an approaching low-pressure system will begin this morning. The snow will mix with or change to ice pellets late this afternoon and then taper to flurries in the evening. Total snow and ice pellet accumulations of 20 to 30 cm are expected by this evening.

Strong easterly winds are also expected to develop with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h by this afternoon. These winds in combination with the snow will create poor visibility in blowing snow this afternoon and will continue to cause difficult travel conditions into the evening.

Conditions will improve tonight as the precipitation tapers off.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.
