Public and community input is being sought on the new Residential Tenancy Act, which will provide more protections for Island landlords and tenants.
The proposed modernized legislation is now available online and outlines rules that affect landlords and tenants in areas such as emergency repairs, rent increases, fees, inspections, evictions and payment of rent.
Islanders are encouraged to provide feedback by the end of March through written submissions by March 20 or through an online survey from March 3 to 20.
Schedule of public consultation sessions:
- March 9 at the Holland College West Prince Campus, Alberton, 6-8 p.m.
- March 11 at Credit Union Place, Summerside, 6-8 p.m.
- March 25 at Montague Regional High School, Montague, 6-8 p.m.
- March 26 at Jack Blanchard Hall, Charlottetown, 6-8 p.m.
Introducing updated residential rental legislation is part of government’s overall efforts to address housing challenges across the province.
Last year, there were more than 1,500 housing starts, of which rental units accounted for almost half.
The new Residential Tenancy Act would replace the Rental of Residential Properties Act, which is now 30 years old.
