CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who sucker punched his victim and knocked out several teeth was sentenced recently to 20 days in jail.
Daniel Vincent MacKenzie, 21, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded to the assault.
Crown attorney John Diamond told the court that on May 18, the police saw MacKenzie approach the victim, yell at him, call the man a liar and then sucker punch him.
The court heard the blow knocked out several of the victim’s teeth.
Diamond said the victim was requesting $11,952 in restitution for dental work.
Defence lawyer Conor Mullin told the court alcohol played a factor in the offence and there had been a dispute between the two parties.
MacKenzie acted inappropriately, Mullin said.
“He understands that what he did was wrong.”
Before hearing his sentence, MacKenzie addressed the court to say he was incredibly sorry for what happened.
Along with the jail time, which MacKenzie was allowed to serve on weekends, he will be on probation for 18 months.
The conditions of the probation included paying $11,952 in restitution and having no contact with the victim.
