GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A judge warned a motorist with a long record of reckless, criminal driving he was putting his life and that of others in jeopardy each time he hit the road.
“It would look as if you had a bit of a death wish," Chief Judge Nancy Orr told Jeffery Joseph Cluney recently in provincial court.
Orr sentenced Cluney to 14 months in jail for a string of offences, including dangerous operation of a vehicle, two counts of operating a vehicle while prohibited and refusing to provide a breath sample. He was given credit of 51 days for time served.
Cluney has four prior convictions related to impaired driving and two prior convictions of driving while prohibited.
“Your record is atrocious and current," said Orr. “It’s a waste, Mr. Cluney … a waste of your life."
Orr said incarceration appears to be the only way to keep Cluney off the road. He ended up in a coma after a violent collision earlier this year.
Still, he was handed a five-year driving prohibition that is intended to keep him from getting behind the wheel for a long time.
He will also be on probation for three years.
