Enhanced shoreline protection is a key part of the Liberal platform, says the Island Liberal leader.

Wade MacLauchlan said while Islanders are doing their part to reduce P.E.I.’s carbon footprint, it will not prevent some of the worst effects of climate change.

For that reason, the party proposed the Shoreline Protection Initiative to help protect the province from rising sea levels.

The Liberal party is proposing a four-year, $8-million initiative to assess, map and respond to flood risk.

During the current year, the Liberals are proposing to invest $1 million in shoreline protection, with the balance of the fund used between now and 2023.

“As we adapt to a changing world, it is very important for us to get this right,” MacLauchlan said. “For that reason, our plan is to carefully assess our risk points and respond on the basis of the best possible information.”

The shores that need immediate attention include Basin Head, Borden-Carleton, Cedar Dunes, Charlottetown (Riverside Drive), Corran Ban, Georgetown, Malpeque Bay, Oyster Bed Bridge,

Panmure Island, Souris and Victoria, he said, adding those areas will be the party’s first focus.

Over the past number of years, P.E.I. has taken steps to protect the environment and contribute to reductions in greenhouse gases, which include investments in renewable energy and home efficiency.
