A P.E.I. delegation is heading to China in hopes of expanding economic opportunities.

The delegation is joining federal ministers and Atlantic premiers on the Atlantic Growth Strategy running from today until Nov. 13.

China is viewed as a world market that offers many opportunities for growth and prosperity.

Premier Wade MacLauchlan sees the economic mission as a means to promote the province’s diverse and vibrant economy that is comprised of traditional and innovative sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, clean energy and biosciences. He also says the province and China have a long-standing relationship and are both looking for mutual prosperity and growth opportunities.

Significant headway towards the goal of quadrupling sales with China by 2025 is well underway with over $64 million already generated in trade, education and tourism.

“Prince Edward Island is known worldwide for many reasons, from our unrivalled coastal red shores to the iconic P.E.I. lobster, and as we move forward, we want to cement our name in China as the go-to destination for trade of our goods and services, tourism and for our education systems. We know that if Islanders and the Chinese work together, we can get ahead together.”

Wayne MacLean, general manager of W.A. Grain & Pulse Solutions, says China, with a consistently growing market, focus on building respectful relationships and increasing spending power, is a wise choice for building agri-food relationships and expanding export business.
