CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A salmonella outbreak has prompted Health Canada to issue a food recall warning of red, yellow, white and sweet yellow onions imported from U.S.-based grower Thomson International Inc.
Over the weekend, Health Canada issued the recall warning after an outbreak of salmonella affected seven provinces. There have been 120 confirmed cases linked to the outbreak in Canada so far, including one in P.E.I.
Health Canada has reported red onions are the likely source of the outbreak, but Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, Calif., has recalled all varieties of onions that may have been contaminated.
The health agency is urging consumers not to purchase onions imported from the U.S. under the El Competidor, Imperial Fresh, Onions 52, Tender Loving Care, Thomson International or Thomson Premium brands.
Symptoms of salmonellosis can include chills, fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps or a sudden headache.
