O'LEARY, P.E.I. — Town officials in O'Leary are taking some guidelines the City of Summerside recently posted on backyard bonfires and turning them into policy.

Council gave first reading to the guidelines during its June meeting.

That follows a request from the O’Leary Fire Department for guidance in handling complaints residents make about neighbours’ bonfires.

In the department’s monthly report to council, fire chief Ron Phillips said the complaints put the department in the awkward position of refereeing between neighbours.

Council decided a policy would give the department some clarity and the policy will note that burning of garbage is illegal.
