CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Islanders on construction sites may hear some extra messages around safe work habits in the coming weeks.

With growing demands on the construction industry on P.E.I., safety officials want to make sure workers and employers are taking the proper precautions to work safely.

Over the coming weeks, there will be a focused education and compliance initiative, where occupational health and safety officers will be visiting construction sites across the province. The officers will be checking to see that workers are wearing their personal protective equipment and following provincial safety regulations.

"We’re pleased to partner with the Workers Compensation Board on this education initiative and we hope that it makes a difference in preventing accidents,” said Sam Sanderson, general manager of the Construction Association of Prince Edward Island.

"We all want the same thing. It’s about making sure every worker comes home safely to their family at the end of the day."

Stuart Affleck, chairman of the Workers Compensation Board, says the construction industry, by nature, is a higher risk workplace. The WCB’s new campaign will hopefully help supervisors to guide important conversations about safety on the job and lead to safer workplaces.
