There have been five overdoses in P.E.I. related to fentanyl since May 5, says chief public health officer Dr. Heather Morrison.

Morrison provided the update this morning during a news conference about the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in the province.

As she also provided an update on the fentanyl situation in P.E.I., Morrison said four of the five overdoses involved people reporting heroin use.

Three of the five were also related to cocaine use, Morrison said.

Of the people who overdosed, Morrison said three were males and two were females.

Two cases involved people in their 20s while the other three were in their 30s.

On May 8, Morrison provided a public warning about fentanyl in the province after three people overdosed in little more than a day.

At the time, Morrison said she asked people to take steps to reduce the risk, including carrying kits with naloxone.
