P.E.I. is in for a messy system bringing snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and strong wind starting Thursday afternoon, says SaltWire Network’s chief meteorologist Cindy Day.
Day is calling for close to 20 centimetres of snow for Prince County with between 10 and 15 cm falling on Kings County and Queens County.
She anticipates gusts will reach 80 to 90 km/hr.
“It’s a powerful punch of wind but it comes through quickly,’’ says Day.
The storm system, she notes, is currently just south of Lake Erie and continues to intensify. Snow should start falling on P.E.I. around 4 p.m. Thursday with ice pellets and freezing rain mixing in around 11 p.m. She says Friday should be “quite pleasant and mild.’’
Recent sunny, warmer weather has been starting the melting process that is celebrated by golfers and other pursuers of non-snow related outdoor activity.
Day says there is increasing heat in the sun as spring creeps closer.
Still, she cautions that less-than-pleasant wintry weather still awaits Islanders.
“I don’t think we are through with messy, sloppy systems,’’ she says.
A couple more good dumps of snow, Day adds, may also be in the offing.
