CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who said he worked as a personal assistant for singer Todrick Hall and who broke a curfew because he had to go to New York City has been fined $400.
Brodie John Gallant, 27, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown recently where he pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching a recognizance.
Crown attorney John Diamond told the court Gallant was on a recognizance out of Halifax, which included a curfew.
In April, Halifax police contacted the Charlottetown police asking them to do a curfew check.
Diamond said Gallant wasn’t home, and it was confirmed he was in New York City instead.
In June, Charlottetown police conducted another curfew check for the police in Halifax and found Gallant wasn’t there.
Defence lawyer Alex Dalton told the court Gallant was a personal assistant to Hall, who is a former American Idol contestant, YouTube star and judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Dalton said Gallant went to New York City after getting a call from his boss that he had to go there within 10 hours.
Gallant tried to call the Charlottetown and Halifax police but was getting bounced around and didn’t know what to do, Dalton said.
She told the court Gallant went to Halifax in June because he had an interview for firefighting school and he tried to make arrangements but was, again, bounced around.
The court heard Gallant had been living in Halifax but moved back to P.E.I. three months ago.
Before hearing his sentence, Gallant addressed the court and said he never should have left his home.
“I know how serious this is and I’m sorry for what I did,” he said.
Douglas fined Gallant $100 for the first breach and $300 for the second.
Diamond told the court Gallant is still facing several charges in Halifax, including assault, harassment, mischief and trespassing.
