SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The city’s long-time fire Chief Jim Peters announced his retirement on Friday.

Peters' retirement will be effective June 1.

He said he had mixed emotions about the decision and wished all his members continued success.

Peters had served as a firefighter for 47 years, 38 of those as chief.

The chief’s father and brother were also firefighters and together the family has provided 150 years of service to the city.

Deputy chief Tom Peters will act as the interim chief while the city takes the necessary steps to fill the position.

“Chief Jim Peters has dedicated much of his life to the Summerside Fire Department and built Summerside’s Fire Service into the envy of the Maritimes," said Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart. "On behalf of city council and the citizens of Summerside I want to thank Jim for his service, and we wish him all the best in his retirement.”

The city and Summerside Fire Services will host a retirement celebration to formally honour Peters later this summer.
