MALPEQUE, P.E.I. — The Malpeque Historical Society in Malpeque is once again featuring a six-part lecture series at Keir Memorial Museum during July and August.

Presenters will focus on a variety of topics about local and P.E I. history. 

The first lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 10. All lectures get underway at 10 a.m. There is no admission, but donations are gratefully accepted for the upkeep of the Keir Memorial Museum.

Following is a list of dates, topics and presenters:

July 10: “The Things That People Say: Other songs and stories by Michael Pendergast. Pendergast has a great passion for homegrown folklore and will be telling stories and singing about some of his family. His collection consists of stories which were passed down through three generations.

July 17: “1919-The Soldiers Return from the Great War” by Louise Morris. Morris has a passion for history and genealogy and used her research skills in doing several projects about veterans and specifically Company C of the First World War when MacNaught Centre focused its project on the 105th Battalion.That project led her to a study of the veterans after the war.

July 24: “Historic Site Finally Revealed: Waiting 40 Years Glenaladale is open to public” by Sterling Stratton. An artist in pen and ink sketches, Stratton brings to life the Glenaladale Estate in his sketch of it as well as telling the importance of it to the Island. Glenaladale is only one of the many sketches he has done.

July 31: “Learning from the Experts” by Olive Bryanton. Having just finished her Ph.D at UPEI in May, Bryanton will talk about her study and what she has found about the realities of aging for women 85+ living in rural communities in P.E.I., particularly what supports or limits their ability to age in place.

Aug. 7: “Fishing Stories” by Malpeque Fisherman John MacDonald. He will talk about the fishing industry in the Malpeque area, as well as tell stories about fishing, past and present.

Aug. 14: “Happy Tales” by Dutch Thompson. Hr will present fun stories from bygone days on P.E.I. From the salt herring cure to the false teeth that got away, his stories are guaranteed to provide plenty of laughs.
