ALBERTON, P.E.I. — Members of the ladies' auxiliary of the Rev. W.J. Phillips Residence have a basic, but positive, reason for being involved with the organization.
“I guess because we like to help people,” said Shirley Wallace. “We are interested in the seniors and try to make things good for them.”
The auxiliary formed shortly after the home opened in the Town of Alberton nearly 21 years ago. It currently has a dozen members and could use more.
Leona Lane is the newest member. She joined over a year ago because she said she had the time to devote to the organization.
“You can’t overlook the fact everyone is aging,” said Lane, noting that members today might be benefitting from the services of auxiliary members in years to come.
“We know seniors are healthier when they’re active,” she said. The auxiliary members help organize and deliver activities.
The organization sends out yearly letters seeking financial support for the residents. They use the funds for the residents’ benefit, including buying bingo prizes and calling bingo games.
The auxiliary provides Christmas gifts for all the residents and makes cupcakes for special occasion treats. They recently helped with the home's open house strawberry and ice cream social and provided $500 towards the rental of an events tent.
The group meets on the third Monday of every month except for July and August. Anyone interested in joining the auxiliary is encouraged to contact the group’s president, Vaunda Richard, at 902-853-4809.
“Residents and staff really appreciate all the volunteer time and effort the Ladies Auxiliary has given,” said residence manager Colleen Parker.
