Summerside Electric Utility April report
SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — With a long list of completed tasks from the City of Summerside’s monthly electric utility report, here’s a list of the noteworthy announcements:
- The City of Summerside awarded a tender to Township GM to acquire an electric vehicle – the Chevy Bolt. Two cars will be purchased – one to be used by meter readers and the other for employees of the wastewater treatment plant.
- Line crews have started the removal of electrical infrastructure at the former Heritage Trailer Park, off Water Street East, to allow for the new development of Waters Edge subdivision.
- Electricians repaired boardwalk, Heather Moyse Drive and Mackenzie Drive lighting systems.
- Electricians installed new lighting for Legere Park splash pad
- 52.7 per cent of the city’s electricity was generated by wind power in April
- Generator run hours were 6.8 hours
- Six new electric customers were energized this month
- There were two electric service upgrades
- 10 customers were affected by power outages
- Two room heaters were sold in April on the Heat for Less Now Program.
Spotlight on immigration
Immigration clients continue to be a focus of the City of Summerside’s Economic Development department according to the monthly report. The department is facilitating about 12 PNP client meetings a week with candidates interested in “investing” in Summerside from across the globe and in various sectors.
Currently, the first wave of clients are entering the settlement phase of the immigration process, the report stated.
The report also outlined the department has partnered with focus seminars to highlight investment opportunities, worked with PNP investors who have stakes in the downtown core that are looking to “revitalize and reposition” some key properties, and expand commercial offerings in the downtown.
Major money saved
According to the City of Summerside’s monthly economic development report, the Credit Union Place storage project has saved the city and CUP over $107,000 in energy charges.
The project was commissioned 17 months ago in partnership with Samsung Renewable.

Culture Summerside a busy spot
There’s a lot on the go at the Culture Summerside Department. Here’s a breakdown of the happenings:
- Wyatt Heritage Properties Olde Fashioned Carnival set for June 21
- In June the department will host the travelling exhibit: “After the War,” presented by the Canadian Centre for the Great War. The exhibit tells the personal stories of returning Canadian soldiers.
- The 63rd Summerside Lobster Carnival program has been developed and the event is set for July 11, 12 and 13. The carnival’s parade will be held at 12 p.m. on July 13. While lobster supper dinner tickets are on sale.
- From July 22 to 24 Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc. in partnership with Culture Summerside, Harbourfront Theatre, Eptek Art and Culture Centre, the College of Piping and La Belle Alliance will present the Summerside Arts Festival. The festival will include artist highlights, arts and artisan demonstrations on Water Street, and the return of the sculptural exhibition “Refresh,” which challenges artists to work only using donated and recycled materials.
Water and sewer statistics for April
The monthly municipal services report was presented to Summerside City Council recently. Here’s the general operational statistics breakdown:
