KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Users of the Kensington rink’s back dressing rooms can enjoy a hot shower now, thanks to a new water heater.

Dressing rooms 5, 6 and 7 at Credit Union Centre were at the far end of the hot water lines and had little to no hot water.

“It was difficult to get it past warm, really,” said Kensington’s chief administrative officer (CAO), Geoff Baker.

The improvements were announced at the Feb. 24 committee of council meeting.

The matter of water temperatures was raised last year when some rink users wrote a letter to the town asking for hot water.

The new water heater cost just over $1,000.

New heaters were also installed in dressing rooms 5 and 6 for around $940.

The additions were budgeted under repairs and maintenance. Altogether, Baker called the investment “very reasonable”.

Kensington has put more than $1 million into the facility since the municipality took over the operation in 2011.

The centre lost money for the first few years but has since brought finances back to the positive, said Baker.

“We operate it on the philosophy that we won’t use taxpayer dollars from just the town of Kensington to be able to operate that facility. It would be unfair. It serves such a large population that the financial wherewithal of the facility would fall on the backs of 1,600 residents of Kensington. So that’s a priority for us - that the facility be able to operate through the generation of its own revenue," Baker concluded.
