CORNWALL, P.E.I. - Judy Herlihy has announced her intention to run for municipal council in Cornwall in the upcoming municipal election on Nov. 5.

A chartered professional accountant and mother of two, Herlihy settled in Cornwall in 2008 with her husband, Ryan.

“Cornwall was Ryan’s hometown and it quickly became mine,” she said. “It’s the ideal place to raise our children.”

Born into a military family, Herlihy refers to herself as a “base brat” and says the frequent childhood moves helped her appreciate her life in Cornwall.

“Cornwall means family and community; it’s a place where I can put down roots.”

Herlihy says one of the main issues she’s hearing from residents is the Cornwall Bypass, and how they did not feel they had adequate input and information on the final product.

“With the completion of the bypass, there will be many changes over the next few years to Cornwall’s main street. I want to hear from Cornwall residents and represent their suggestions on council before important decisions are made.”

Herlihy is an active volunteer as board chairwoman and treasurer of the Women’s Network P.E.I. and treasurer of the P.E.I. Coalition for Women in Government. She is also a member of the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention Youth Engagement Working Group and a volunteer mom with the Queens Region Girl Guides.

“We need a strong voice on issues such as the new main street, land use and development, and improved access to services like public transportation. I want to be that voice.”
