CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. woman who was on two court orders not to drive and had a suspended licence for unpaid fines when the police pulled her over was sentenced recently to 45 days in jail.
Rose Marie Roberts, 62, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where she pleaded guilty to driving while prohibited and breaching her probation.
Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on Feb. 7, Charlottetown police pulled Roberts over and found she was driving while under a prohibition for a drunk driving conviction from November 2018.
She was also under a probation order that banned her from driving any motorized vehicle.
When the police pulled Roberts over, she had a suspended licence for unpaid fines and the vehicle wasn’t registered or insured.
The court heard Roberts had a previous criminal record that included several drunk driving related offences.
At the time of her court appearance, Roberts owed more than $7,000 in fines, which didn’t include a further $1,225 from tickets the police gave her for the more recent driving offences.
Before sentencing Roberts, Orr said she had a related record and she committed the most recent offences a little more than two months after her prior conviction.
Orr proceeded to list all of the reasons Roberts wasn’t allowed to drive, including the prohibition.
“What’s it going to take to keep you off the road ma’am?”
Roberts will be under a three-year driving prohibition after her release from jail.
