Island artists are encouraged to submit their work to the Provincial Art Bank by Jan. 2 if they would like their art to be considered for purchase next year.
Education Minister Jordan Brown said he encourages local artists to submit their work.
“The art bank provides great exposure for artists, encourages artistic excellence and stimulates interest in the visual arts.”
The collection includes 230 works of art by 130 Island artists and displays the acquired artwork in public buildings and spaces for Islanders to enjoy. Pieces are selected annually using a peer jury process which is administered by the Registrar of the P.E.I. Art Bank Collection.
In February, during the last call for submission, 59 applications were received and 12 new pieces of art were added to the collection, including works by Brenda Whiteway, Christine Trainor, Damien Worth, Hans Wendt, Jason “Lenny” Gallant, Monica Lacey, Nancy Cole, Noella Richard, Norah Pendergast, Rilla Marshall, Susan Christensen and Terry Stevenson.
Provincial Art Bank purchases are made possible through provincial government funding of $10,000 annually. Through the Cultural Action Plan, which is intended to bring cultural and creative industries together to further support Island artists and their work, the annual investment increased to $20,000 in both 2018 and 2019.
A catalogue of art bank acquisitions will be created next year to celebrate Island artists and 40 years of the art bank.
