A collision in the area of Orwell this morning has left a man dead.

Witnesses said the accident involved a one-ton pickup truck fitted with a salt/sand spreader. The other vehicle was a small red car.

Both collided head-on, said a report issued by the RCMP just before 2 p.m. today.

A 34-year-old P.E.I. man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with undetermined injuries, said the police report.

Less than one kilometre from the accident scene is a government sand and shale pit.

The posted speed where the accident happened on Route 210, the Kinross Road, is 80 kilometers per hour and road conditions were icy, said one witness, who did not want his name used in media reports.

The RCMP issued a note around 8:30 a.m. Thursday saying that all of the Kinross Road had closed, from Route 1 to Route 24, which is known as the Murray Harbour Rd.

It is the third fatal accident on Island roads in a week.
