CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A nine-year-old girl who was at the heart of a lawsuit against the P.E.I. government and a doctor who treated her has died.

Emma Roche’s death was announced in an obituary Thursday. It said she died at the IWK Hospital in Halifax on Oct. 6.

Roche suffered brain damage after her heart stopped at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2011 when she was less than a year old.

Several doctors treated Emma over multiple visits to the hospital and although all four were initially listed in a statement of claim, all but Dr. Peter Noonan have been dropped from the lawsuit as defendants.

Her parents filed the lawsuit alleging negligence in the care provided to their daughter.

In its statement of defence, the province said it provided a reasonable and appropriate level of care to Emma.

A funeral for Emma will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Dunstan’s Basilica in Charlottetown on Saturday with a celebration of life to follow at the Hampton Inn and Suites.
