A gas leak scare led to the evacuation of a Sobeys store in Timberlea on Friday morning.

Staff at the store at 65 Marketplace Way, which just opened for business, called the Halifax fire department shortly after 11 a.m.  Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum said they reported the store was being evacuated because of a possible gas leak. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and haze in the store but no gas leak.

“Pretty quickly they did determine that perhaps a C02 (fire) extinguishing system went off and they ended up in a compressor room checking for the source of smoke,” Meldrum said. "They were able to confine that and ventilated (the smoke). . . . Whatever kind of mechanical problem there was at that time appears to be under control at this time.”

The Sobeys communications office in Ontario didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
