CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A 23-year-old Emyvale man has been sentenced to 15 months in jail after pleading guilty to an armed robbery in Charlottetown late last year.

Coulton Wilfred Clarkin will also be on probation for three years following his release.

Clarkin pleaded guilty on June 26 to committing the crime on Nov. 28 at Capital Convenience and Smoke Shop (formerly Smooth Smoke Shop) on University Avenue.

The Crown stayed a charge against Clarkin of wearing a mask while committing an offence.

Shop owner Tie Deng told The Guardian shortly after the crime that a man entered his establishment and showed him what Deng described as a small knife.

The suspect, who was wearing blue plastic gloves and a bandana that covered his nose and mouth, purchased a lighter and when the cash drawer was open, grabbed money from the till.

From there, Clarkin left and ran through the Enterprise Rent-a-Car parking lot where Deng said he got into a white pick-up truck and quickly left the scene.

Clarkin has been ordered to pay Deng restitution of $480 and write a letter of apology to the victim.
