CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — An Australian doctor facing child pornography charges in P.E.I. is expected to have them transferred to his home country where he is facing further charges.
Dr. Stephen Peter Menzies Murray wasn’t in P.E.I. Supreme Court Tuesday when his case was called before Justice Gregory Cann in Charlottetown.
Lawyer Brendan Hubley was there on Murray’s behalf and said the accused is in Australia facing other charges there.
Last year, Murray was charged in P.E.I. with possessing, making and distributing child pornography.
The allegations related to written material and the RCMP said they arrested him after a member of the public reported suspicious activity.
Murray was allowed to return to Australia in November on several conditions that included posting $750,000 in bail.
Other conditions included a ban on using the internet other than for work or communicating with legal counsel or family.
On Tuesday, the court heard Murray’s P.E.I. charges are going to be transferred to Australia where they will be dealt with.
Once that happens, the Crown in P.E.I. will stay the charges before the Supreme Court.
Murray’s case will be called again in P.E.I. Supreme Court on June 11.
