SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — All four derelict buildings the city had purchased are a go for demolition.
The city bought the downtown building's – three on Summer Street and one on Water Street – to remove the financial burden of demolishing them and to entice developers to build there. The final go-ahead was granted during Summerside's monthly council meeting at city hall on Aug. 17.
Coun. Brian McFeely said the city is prepared for the next phase, with hopes for developments to start breaking ground in 2021. Heritage preservation options will be explored for two of the buildings - the former Royal Bank and the former Crockett-Gallant buildings.
"To see what can be saved there," he said.
Meanwhile, Coun. Cory Snow reminded council that a motion to take action against the derelict Granville Street building will be tabled for yet another month – this is to ensure the discussion isn't delayed further should the city's final negotiations with the property owner fall through, he said.
