SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A 70-year-old Summerside man has been arrested and charged after police found him with contraband tobacco.

On Dec. 6 at about 1 p.m., Summerside police received information regarding contraband tobacco being sold from a Reads Corner area motel.

Police went to the motel and located the man in possession of illegal tobacco products.

He was arrested at the scene, and a subsequent search of his motel room turned up more than 200 cartons and bags of contraband cigarettes.

In total, more than 40,000 cigarettes were seized.

The estimated street value of the seized products is between $7,000 and $8,000.

The man was released from custody and will appear in court in January to answer to charges under the Excise Act.
