SUMMERSIDE – Construction of Summerside’s new indoor sports field is expected to get underway this spring.

City council got an update on the project from staff during its committee meetings on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

JP Desrosiers, director of community services, said preparation work for the facility is well underway. The goal is to start construction this spring and to have the turf field and dome completed by November 2021, with indoor infrastructure done shortly thereafter.

The facility itself will be 65,000 square feet and 75 to 80 feet high. Its turf field will be protected by an inflatable dome, allowing for a number of different kinds of sporting and community events throughout the year.

The facility is part of a slate of upgrades to local sporting venues as part of the preparations for the 2023 Canada Winter Games.
