SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — With the continued growth of LeFurgey subdivision in mind, city officials are planning to invest $100,000 in the neighbourhood’s park in order to add new equipment.

“The park that’s currently there is not sufficient for the age and amount of kids in LeFurgey,” said Coun. Carrie Adams, who represents that part of the city.

“What’s there is for toddler-age children.”

Adams said the park is an important part of the community that people wanted to be restored.

“When I went door-to-door last election, this park was one thing that people in the area said they needed,” said Adams.

The breakdown of costs and the equipment have not been decided.

“I’m just glad that the council agreed that this was an important budget item in order to keep our children active and to have something close to their homes that they can play on.”

Billy McGuigan, a resident in the subdivision, has three kids and welcomed news of the project.

“I think it’s spectacular for LeFurgey subdivision as most of it is a growing community.”

The city has done a remarkable job in various parks across the city, he said.

“I’d like to see a new pavement slab. It’ll be pretty cool if we can convert it into a hockey rink in winter and tennis court in summer.”

Young kids these days spend a lot of time on their iPads and electronic devices. Rejuvenating the park would be a huge step for the health of the children and community, said McGuigan.

“The young kids that are growing here, I think it’s a great opportunity for them.”

Darcy Gallant has been living in LeFurgey for nine years. He has two young sons.

“We go to the park, probably four times a week in summer time.”

The city is doing a great job by installing the equipment and promoting more activities, said Gallant.

“The kids are there so much and that’s going be another reason for them to be there.”

Gallant said $100,000 is a reasonable investment.

“The playground stuff is expensive.”
