HAMPSHIRE, P.E.I. - Christmas trees have another use when the holiday is over.

Dozens of people dropped off their Christmas trees for the furry friends at Island Hill Farm for its fifth annual Christmas Tree Drop Off last weekend.

The farm’s goats, sheep, pigs and alpacas eat the trees.

Natalie Clarkin of Emyvale dropped of a tree for the first time this year.

“I think it’s a better use for it after Christmas instead of leaving it to rot on the side of the road,” she said. “It gives the animals something to eat and it’s recycling.”

Flory Sanderson, owner of Island Hill Farm, said the farm continues to collect trees year-round.

No artificial or chemically treated trees will be accepted, only real trees.

Sanderson said the farm is also getting ready for kitting season, when several goats are expected to give birth.

To get ready, the farm is accepting donations of dog coats, dog dishes, collars, towels and more.
